General Questions/Information
Using Winzip
Think of using WinZip and zip archives like this:
You are going on a trip and need to pack a bunch of stuff (i.e.. clothes, comb, razor, beer), but it's a big pain in the ass to carry all these things individually, so you put them in a suitcase. Now you only have one thing to carry AND this one thing (suitcase) takes up
a lot less room
(compressed) than all the individual items did.
Now you arrive at your destination and because you are a slob (example only!! :)
) you simply open the suitcase and dump all the stuff out onto the
bed with nothing lost or damaged (hopefully) in transit.
Bingo! you now know all about zip archives (simply substitute the items for files and the suitcase for a single "zip" file). Now, we're not going to be slobs, so we're going to dump our suitcase in a drawer instead of all over the bed.
This drawer is a directory or folder on your computers hard drive.
WinZip is the software that you use to make the suitcase and put stuff in it.
There are various methods of compressing the data (tar, gzip, arj, rar, etc.),
but they all essentially accomplish the same thing.
